Recent amendments to Malta's taxation system in the context of Malta's international tax regime

Abstract

Malta offers a number of opportunities to individuals and organisations who decide to select Malta as their basis for international trade. Malta's Fiscal Regime, the extensive Double Treaty Network, a well educated and multi-lingual workforce together with competitive running costs helps in attracting investors towards the country. After Malta's accession within the European Union (EU) and the recent amendments enacted in Malta's Fiscal Regime, will further enhance Malta's competitive position within the financial services sector when compared to other Foreign Jurisdictions. This dissertation examines the changes as regards the International Tax Regime within the Maltese context. Particular reference is made to the amended Maltese Income Tax Act and the Income Tax Management Act stipulations these originated from EU pressures on State Aid Regulations relating to Companies with Foreign Income, together with International Trading Companies are being considered as the basis for the compilation of this thesis. The study also examines the pertinent tax refunds together with the necessary safeguards. The latter is considered a fundamental area with regards to the amendments taken place. Overall, the study is an attempt to contribute to the current debate regarding the lnternational Taxation and Malta's contribution as a hubbing centre for doing business.
