Abstract: | The building housing the Notarial Archives in St Christopher Street, Valletta, is believed to be a seventeenth century Palazzo. It is built on three storeys and houses a very rich and unique collection of documents where the oldest volume preserved dates back to 1467. A good number of these archives have been badly damaged due to years of neglect, and possibly inappropriate storage conditions. The aim of the study was to assess the building, to try to determine whether the building itself, and/ or its environment, could be affecting the preservation of the collection. The condition of the fabric, both internally and externally, was thus studied to get a clear understanding of the main problems affecting the materials and the source/ s of deterioration. Familiarisation with the history of the building was the first step, followed by the conducting of interviews with people working in the building and other professionals, to get further knowledge on the Palazzo, its use and its problems. A visual inspection was then carried out. This led to the decision to carry out testing, both non- invasive and invasive. The survey also aided in the choice of appropriate sampling areas and methods of analysis. This included tests to understand moisture and salt-related problems, especially in the ground floor. Results obtained indicate that the primary source of moisture in the ground floor is rising damp, with other sources such as leaking drains and rainwater accumulating in the courtyard acting as secondary sources. Recommendations for the better care of the building and the collection include the replacement of drainage pipework, the repair of windows to be made watertight, and the investigation for any possible insect or pest infestation inside the beams. Interventions on the courtyard and basement are also suggested. All interventions should be carefully and meticulously carried out. |
