The effect of the 2007 port reform on the Maltese manufacturing industry

Abstract

The scope of this study is to highlight both the direct and indirect effects of the port reform on the Maltese manufacturing industry and subsequently correlate the measures taken in the reform with the industry's performance. This study also attempts to identify in what ways the ports system became more efficient and cost-effective, which ultimately is beneficial for the manufacturing corporations in the country in the light of external challenges. Such study will be composed by firstly analysing trends and prospects in the Maltese manufacturing industry. Henceforth, statistical data for employment, investment and gross value added will be used to formulate overviews in this area. In the light of Malta being an EU member, the European Sea Port Policy is going to be analysed. This will highlight the major challenges encountered by all European ports. A description of the port sector is going to be illustrated to capture the whole scenario. The functions of the Valletta Grand Harbour and the Marsaxlokk Freeport are also going to be examined. A depth research on the overall process and effects of 2007 port reform is going to be outlined. The main focus is going to be on the reduction in tariffs, efficiency, costs and impacts towards competitiveness.
