Abstract: Tourism in island states provides a main avenue for diversification. Characteristics of island states and the significance of tourism to their economies are outlined in Chapter 1. The positive and adverse effects of tourism on developing countries, their economies, socio-culture, environment and finally development are discussed in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 the history of tourism in Gozo from the earlier days and through the Development Plans is traced, outlining some main trends and features. Various impacts of tourism on Gozo are then discussed in Chapter 4. For the purpose of this analysis a 'mini-survey' was undertaken among tourists. The proceedings and intents of this survey are explained in Chapter 5. Through these results and data collected from local sources, some characteristics of Gozo' s tourist industry are highlighted. Features of the domestic and international tourist market, and the structure of the tourist product in Gozo are detailed. A marketing policy is suggested in Chapter 6. Finally in Chapter 7 some suggestions to overcome shortcomings in the tourist facilities and attractions are attempted. Regional planning and organisation are proposed.
