Abstract: Recognition of human-pet interaction has a long history. Contact with companion animals is seen to enhance the psychological wellbeing and the quality of life of the owner. Its influence within the field of psychology is a recent one. The aim of this qualitative research is to explore the human-animal bond and the role animals have in the life of an individual, as experienced through six participants who volunteer with animal sanctuaries. The participants aged 20 - 64 provided a broad range of benefits and concerns encountered across their life span. Data analysis brings forward enriching experiences of the present relationship with pets which influences the participants' lifestyle and attitudes towards people and animals. The human-animal bond is evaluated to be beneficial and its implication within psychological therapy is discussed.
