Abstract: This research sought to explore the intersection of sexual identity with age among older gay men. Such research seems to be lacking, especially in Malta, Resulting in a number of myths which portray older gay men as being depressed and lonely. Research, however, suggests that over the years gay men have developed excellent coping skills, high self-concepts and a good support network, as this research project will demonstrate. This study sought to explore how sexuality is experienced among older Maltese gay men in the light of the biological, psychological and social domains. With the help of the narrative technique, this research uses the stories of five older Maltese gay men to explore how they make sense of the domains in which they are embedded. A total collection of five in-depth stories formed the basis of this study which was conducted using a narrative approach. These narratives were later analysed using the constant comparative method and the results suggest that with age comes greater acceptance of the gay identity. This acceptance is fostered through the help of a strong social support network and/or being in a relationship. In fact, both provided the respondents with security and support. At the same time, however respondents lamented the fact that certain changes are needed with regards to gay rights in Malta, together with the provision of cultural products addressing this community.
