Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to analyse and evaluate the perspectives as regards fisheries and fishing in the Mediterranean with special reference to demand and supply of locally caught and imported fish in Malta. In particular this study is mainly divided into three parts, which separately include several chapters. Part one, which can be referred to as a 'Survey of the Literature', consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 is mainly an introductory one. It is meant to give a general view of the subject. Chapter 2 consists of two sections. The first is meant to give a brief description of the perspectives regarding fisheries and fishing in the Mediterranean, with additional information on fishing potentiality in some specific Mediterranean countries. The second section treats several problems encountered with the Mediterranean fishing such as general problems, pollution in the Mediterranean and others. Chapter 3 includes a brief description of the Maltese fishing 'industry namely the Maltese fishermen, their fishing fleet, the marketing of fish and the Fisheries' Department.
