Abstract: This dissertation attempts to explain the success of the Saturday 5/90 numbers game, largely from a statistical and econometrical point of view. Hence in Chapter One, wherein we discussed at length the past, present and future trends of Lotto Games in Malta, we developed a Pearson chi square test for fairness and an econometrical model to evaluate the popularity of this type of game of chance in Malta. Probability calculations were also carried carried out. A report on a survey carried out on lotto games, their computerization and future trends is included in Chapter Two. This leads us to what can be termed as the second part of this dissertation which deals with the topic of computerization. The merits and demerits of the two systems were compared and contrasted in view of the prevailing economic, social and technological milieu· Suggestions for a successful implementation of a computerized system are dealt with in the last chapter.
