Abstract: Along the years, banking services have developed, with the help of the technology, subsequentially ATMs, epos, internet banking and mobile banking were introduced. A clear demonstration of this is that for example in 2018 digital loans were established in the Maltese markets, specifically for personal loans. The face-to-face approach is still popular in Malta for loan granting, but as time goes by, more innovations will help the banking industry. This dissertation aims to investigate if banks are willing to continue investing in digital banking, such as digital loans and what impact this could have on future economies if digital lending continues to expand. This dissertation will analyse the local Banks’ environment to see what plan of action they are taking to implement the use of digital banking and customers’ perception on digital banking. This study aims to answer the following research question: 1. To what extent are local banks trying to implement the use of digital banking and whether any risk assessments have been carried out in this respect? This study will be conducted by collecting data from dissertations, books, e-books and academic articles. Also, qualitative approach was conducted consisting of questionnaires with both local and international banks, to investigate into the changes that were brought about by the rise of this market, especially due to Covid-19. In conclusion, this dissertation, will provide insight into digital banking from different local and international banks, but also from the regulators’ perspective, and their opinions going forward.
