Abstract: Michael Hoskin spent ten university years as a mathematician, and then became an historian of science, first at Leicester University, and then at Cambridge, where he was university lecturer from 1959 until taking early retirement in 1988. Dr Hoskin then embarked on a second career locating Neolithic dolmens throughout southern Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa and measuring their orientations. His book, 'Tombs, temples and their orientations: A new perspective in Mediterranean prehistory' (2001), contains the orientations of some 3000 do/mens, and earned him the Gold Medal of the Kingdom of Spain.
