Abstract: The dissertation attempts a study of Hilary Mantel' s novel Eight Months on Ghazzah Street in relation to feminist and postcolonial studies. It will discuss the associations between gender and culture as depicted in Eight Months on Ghazzah Street. The dissertation considers how perception of the individual is influenced by his cultural background. The first three chapters of the dissertation are devoted to inter-culture tension. The dissertation argues how cultural representations are often the result of misconception. It also argues the benefits of exposing cultural differences. The last two chapters focus on gender tension. The dissertation presents an analysis of the novel exposing the tension that results from gender difference. Moreover the difference that exists within sexual difference is considered. Thus, the dissertation presents an argument against the notion of global Sisterhood.
