Perspectives of practicing psychologists towards psychiatry, psychiatrists and psychiatric treatment in Malta

Abstract

The perspectives of psychologists towards psychiatry, psychiatrists and psychiatric treatment were explored in this study. This study aims at adding further knowledge to the relatively small body of research both abroad and local on this topic. Using criterion sampling, five practicing psychologists from Malta and Gozo were selected and interviewed. Data was analysed utilizing thematic analysis, from which five main themes were generated. All psychologists in the study were hopeful with regards to the future of psychiatry here in Malta and mentioned various positive changes that are happening. General perspectives towards psychotropic drugs were mostly positive. Although side effects were acknowledged, drugs were perceived as necessary but not sufficient. Importance of combined therapy was highlighted. Overprescribing was not attributed to psychiatrists but to other external factors. Hence psychiatrists were perceived as being highly competent at their job. Finally, it was evident that issues of power and job competition also exist in Malta. Despite this the participants felt that they had a good relationship with psychiatrists and emphasised the need for more collaboration. This study provides an understanding of the relationship between psychologists and psychiatry and consequently can be applied so as to improve the current mental health system.
