Mental health problems do not only affect the individuals themselves but also their families. This qualitative study aims to understand the narratives of family members living with a person with mental health problems. The research explores the problems that family members encounter, as well as their coping strategies and needs. Four narrative inquiries were conducted with five family members who lived with or are still living with their relatives with mental health problems. The stories were then analysed using thematic analysis. This research identified four main themes evident in families with mental health problems. Such themes are: stigma; family burden; coping strategies and family needs. The results are consistent with the literature findings and it can be concluded that the experience of living with a person with mental health problems involves stigma, caring responsabilities, management of disruptive behaviour, negative emotions, financial problems, postive feelings, and coping strategies. Anger towards mental health professionals was also heavily conveyed. However, community groups are perceived to be very helpful at providing support and adequate information.en_GB
