Abstract: Code-switching is a phenomenon which occurs in practically all bilingual countries. Indeed, when two languages are in close contact, as they are in Malta, it is not uncommon for speakers to use them interchangeably. Even though many code-switchers in Malta are branded as snobs, many of these speakers also have negative views about their own code-switching habits - a feature which is also common with many code switchers world-wide. This study is concerned with code-switching patterns in Sliema, since this area is renowned for its code-switching behaviours. The present researcher undertook this study in order to confirm her assumption that many people in this area code-switch in order to accommodate others, since both the Maltese and English language are frequently employed in this area. Therefore, besides the fact that respondents were asked questions about their language use, code-switching tendencies and their attitudes towards code switching, respondents' language behaviour during the interviews was also noted in order to add a further dimension to this study.
