Abstract: Theatre is a key culture space that occupies a central role in the cultural activities of many societies; it links different user groups in promoting culture as a popular experience. Theatres are dynamic spaces which present significant challenges due to factors such as variety in type and size, ways in which spaces are used, and user groups. The theatre as a performance space has to satisfy important requirements to address the needs of users which include artists, technical experts, and audiences. Valletta as European Capital of Culture presents an ideal opportunity to examine theatres across Malta and Gozo as focal culture spaces. [excerpt from the Introduction]
