Atypical anorexia nervosa is a partial eating disorder in which the sufferer does not fulfill all the criteria of the full-blown anorexia nervosa or experiences the criteria in a subthreshold manner. The former population suffers similar psychological and physical factors to those who are diagnosed with typical anorexia nervosa. Hence although they have not yet reached the main disorder this does not render them as "normal". A qualitative methodology was used in order to gain an in depth understanding of this overlooked eating disorder. Furthermore the case study method that included semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and other forms of data collection aided in showing the reality of this disorder and moreover the daily ongoing struggle of those who live with this condition. A thematic analysis was used in order to create focus on the main elements experienced by an atypical anorexia sufferer. The results of this study clearly showed that an atypical anorexia sufferer does not differ extensively to a typical anorexia one. The main aim of the study was to create an understanding of a disorder that is so often neglected and furthermore to instill awareness about the importance of helping these victims as opposed to leaving them drown in darkness.en_GB
