Abstract: Women's emancipation in the twentieth century has improved to a certain extent position in society. As a result, the general opinion held in the present times, tends to obscure the fact that the musical world is still subject to discriminatory attitudes reminiscent of past times. This work is not intended to be a manifesto of feminist ideals. It is neither the aim of this dissertation to present a historical account of the participation of women in music or to analyze any of their works. The main aim is to create an awareness about the importance of women in the history of music. This work is also an attempt at giving insight about the reasons for women's suppression in the musical history.
