Abstract: Drug addiction is proving to be a very big problem in Maltese society. It is estimated that in a few years, every family will have a member who takes drugs. This study is going to analyse the perceptions that university students have towards drug addicts. The aim is to look in depth at these perceptions and even understand why they prevail. The qualitative method is being used, using focus groups as the methodology. The qualitative method allows a deeper analysis of the subject. Several themes emerge, such as drug addicts being seen as criminals, drug addicts as not being able to make and hold friendships and female addicts as being more deviant. These seem to be common themes. This study can be useful to understand better how drug addicts are perceived and to be more aware that the stigma surrounding such people is a problem.
