Abstract: An effective education welfare service contributes to the diminishing of a number of personal and societal problems. Through carrying out their various roles and tasks with school-aged children and their families educational social workers strive to give each and every child the best possible benefits from the education system. However, it is a reality that for a number of reasons educational social workers within the local education welfare unit do not function optimally for a number of reasons. The purpose of this dissertation is to highlight the various factors which impinge negatively on the effectiveness of the educational social workers, to discuss the elimination of these factors and propose alternative solutions which would enhance the work of the educational social workers and therefore make it more possible for them to give a more effective service to their clients and, ultimately, to society in general.
