Abstract: This study explores and seeks to understand the dynamics, roles and patterns inside a family where one of the members suffers from depression. Qualitative data, based on 6 in-depth interviews, split into 2 families were conducted and analysed through a grounded theory approach. This research gives an indication of the importance that the family has, and the impact it can leave on a depressive patient. The participant's narratives reveal the experience they went through as a family, the ups and downs that depression has got into their lives. Furthermore this research explores if the family impacts on the recovery of the sufferer and offers future suggestions for future treatment, that will involve the family of the patient rather than the patient on his own.
