Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the support needs of families living with autism. A literature review on the subject highlighted the main characteristics of autism and how this condition may affect family members. A sample of 6 families participated in the study by answering a semi-structured interview developed specifically for this study. Results were presented in the form of case studies. The findings highlighted common characteristic needs of families living with autism. Amongst the main findings, the need for support due to lack of information and knowledge about autism were identified together with lack of specialised services for individuals with autism and their families. The results also provided various guidelines for social work practice including the need for family support to be provided at all levels in the person's development as well as family support needed within the family, within the community and when in contact with service delivery systems.
