Abstract: This study presents a general overview of the phenomena threatening the marine environment in our territorial waters. The main pollutants are listed and discussed in the Maltese context, together with a presentation of the protective and preventive measures existing or proposed. The integral role of the Mediterranean regional centre established here in Malta - REMPEC - is also considered. The writer records a series of unique legal agreements designed to protect the marine environment and all that the word encompasses - the flora and the fauna. The research was aimed at revealing both the national and international legal plans when the protection of the marine environment in our territorial waters is called to the fore.
