Abstract: | Cultural, social, and economic changes are bearing their mark on the family. Priorities have changed throughout time, as did values and beliefs. Inevitably, such changes bring about increased difficulties and problems. Family life is essential for the persons living within it and social workers should be knowledgeable and skilful, in order to support the families they encounter. This study explores the various ways in which the social worker supports families in achieving positive change throughout the social work process. It begins with a literature review, which includes social work knowledge, skills and values required by a social worker. Various social work models and perspectives are also discussed so as to gain a better understanding of the way families function. Focus group sessions made up of professional social workers were used. These groups provided this study with extensive data regarding the profession of social work, as well as the various ways in which they help families achieve better functioning. This research also shed light on the dedication of social workers, the challenges and limitations which they face, as well as, on the extensive work which they carry out. |
