Social workers' response to the expressed needs of non-abusive mothers of sexually abused children

Abstract

Literature on child sexual abuse is very vast. However, very little work has been carried out on the non-abusive mothers of sexually abused children. There has been little acknowledgment to their feelings and emotions during such a difficult and upsetting period. One of the aims of this study is to assess what are the feelings, reactions upon discovering the abuse and needs of non-abusive mothers of sexually abused children. This has been done by conducting in-depth interviews with four mothers identified by social workers working within Agency Appogg. In my research I will also analyse the professionals' role in view of this client group. This has been achieved through a focus group which was held at Agency Appogg with five social workers and a family therapist who come into contact with non-abusive mothers. I have gathered their opinions as to what they feel are the needs of these mothers, how these needs are currently being met and if there is room for improvement. I have also conducted an interview with the Children's Services Manager of Agency Appogg to get a clearer picture of the services being offered. According to the results of the data collected from the interviews and focus group, recommendations will be put forward which may help meet the needs of non-abusive mothers better.
