Abstract: The weakest links in the interacting set of components which constitute a framed structure when it is subjected to non-standard loading conditions are usually the joints between the major structural members rather than the members themselves. This is intuitive but is also logical; joints tend to be designed simply to transmit the reaction forces from lower-order to higher-order members, and these reaction forces are assessed on the basis of the normal ambient-temperature Ultimate Limit State loading conditions.
