Abstract: This study attempts to demonstrate how the natural parents of children who are fostered live this experience. This study also attempts to show some of the feelings of these people. Research shows that fostering does not only affect children but also their biological parents (Burgheim & Dalmar, 2002; Scheppler, 1994; Stroud, 1973). Biological parents are very important especially when it comes to the adjustment of the child to the foster placement and an important source for reunification. This can only be effective if biological parents accept their child's placement. However, help needs to be provided to the biological parents throughout the process (Martin, 2000). This issue emerged in the :findings where the biological parents felt that visitations were very important if reunification is to take place. This study explores the relationship between the biological family and their fostered children. It also studies whether any relationship exists between the foster family and the biological parents and how this can help to foster a positive placement for the child. Finally this study aims to see whether the natural parents envisage their children returning to live with them and what ciifficu]ties they predict they will have if and when they do. This study includes a review of the literature written on the subject as well as an analysis of the information gathered from interviews. From this research study, it was found that a very limited amount of research took place on this topic in Malta. As a result, this study is a step forward towards the enhancement of local research. Moreover, this dissertation also attempts to make recommendations for service development where services for parents of fostered children are concerned.
