Abstract: This research aims to identify awareness of non-speech and speech-related behaviours that help maintain a healthy voice, a practice known as vocal hygiene, with the objective of highlighting knowledge gaps and suggesting remedial actions where appropriate. This is done by examining two main cohorts: teachers providing tuition at different teaching grades and trained and untrained singers in Malta. This was done by means of online questionnaires, gathering 52 preschool and primary teacher responses as well as 117 trained and untrained singer responses; data collected including information on demographics, everyday practices, and knowledge related to the importance of strategies that result in a healthy voice. In line with existing literature, findings indicated that trained singers have more awareness of vocal hygiene measures when compared to untrained singers and teachers. Other findings revealed that primary school teachers experienced voice disorders more frequently when compared to preschool teachers and singers. In contrast to singers, positive correlations were also found when comparing years of teaching with the prevalence of voice-related disorders such as aphonia (complete loss of voice). Results also showed that singers were more inclined to use strategies that help avoid voice problems. These findings provide teachers, singers and SLPs (Speech and Language pathologists) with information about the necessity of raising awareness about using vocal hygiene measures among preschool and primary educators as well as untrained singers, suggesting benefits arising from more training such as talks and informative leaflets.
