Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between the rates of tourist arrivals and the rates of crime in St. Julian's. This study puts to test its objectives to find out whether tourists were contributors to high crime rates in the crime hotspot of St Julian's. This dissertation reviews the general literature on tourism and crime, and specifically highlights the recent incidents of crime occurrences in Paceville. After studying the secondary data on the topic, interviews with Assistant Police Commissioner and the Mayor were formulated, and the outcomes of these were confirmed through an on the ground survey of the area. The participant observation was a spatio-temporal analysis which sought to examine the human aggregate and the security and safety features associated with it. In particular, this study takes a profound look at the issues related to tourism and crime in Paceville. The findings confirm the close relationship that exists between the attributes of the environment and crime in Paceville and investigates the numerous ways of crime opportunities in an overcrowded mass tourism destination. The results and recommendations that came out from this study can be utilized in other developing nightlife resorts in Malta to prevent crime on both resident and visitor.
