Abstract: The objective of this dissertation was to provide an understanding of the important role played in an economy by Central Banks with particular reference to the Central Bank of Malta. Monetary policy and fiscal policy are the major two policies used by Central Banks in order to meet desirable goals within an economy. Moreover, I will provide information regarding monetary policy, its tools and techniques and how Malta adopted such a policy in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the country's financial system. When the idea of joining the European Union came along, the Central Bank of Malta adopted various changes. This was done so that the Central Bank of Malta and the Maltese financial system would be in line with the European Union requirements. The implemented changes adopted by the Central Bank of Malta are outlined in this dissertation.
