Abstract: ICARUS 4 is a non-performance performative event. It is not a performance in the formal sense of the word even though the driving impetus behind it strives to be 'performative'. ICARUS 4 is not a performance because it is neither structured as nor a imed at being one. If some aspects of the presentation are recognisably 'performance', then these should be considered as 'an effect' rather than as 'the aim' of the work procedure followed. ICARUS 4 aspires to be 'performative' at the core in the belief that the irreducible element of 'performance' is intrinsic to the performer's presence in the scenic space. ICARUS 4's concern is thus the journey towa rds the structured act of pe1forming, the habitation of structure, rather than the structure of performance itself. ICARUS 4 aspires to engage the verb, flying, rather than the noun, flight, o f performance.
