Abstract: The following thesis aims at giving an insight into “how a social media exhibition with focus on Instagram can offer a safe space for migrants to discuss and reflect on moving home and its effects on self-identity” (Schranz, 2021). While a generic hypothesis on the effects of moving home on self-identity was derived through initial research, the personal effects of migration may vary from one person to the next. Therefore, a questionnaire was conducted in order to provide the individual answers of the general public. The data gathered was then interpreted into design compositions using minimal graphic design and conceptual art fundamentals. This thesis was written in order to make the much needed connection between the effects of migration on self-identity, social media and minimal design and conceptual art. The objective is to create a digital and physical collection of minimal compositions that depict personal experiences while creating a sense of belonging and/or relation to my project @homeidentity_global (@homeidentity_global, 2020).
