Abstract: | Both Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo were at times criticized by conservative literary critics within the Catholic Church. The monthly Jesuit journal Civilta Cattolica is a point in case. Hardly any play by the Sicilian playwright survived the harsh denigration by staunch Catholic critics. On the other hand, Eduardo De Filippo was censured only for one particular play, De Pretore Vincenzo. Vatican Council II exercised an enormous positive effect on both the Sicilian and the Neapolitan literary evaluation . |
