Abstract: The following dissertation will attempt to analyse the Fantastic in Sylvia Plath's work. The main focus will be directed towards the relationship between Plath's poetry, the Surrealist movement and the magical elements presented in American post war advertising. The introductory chapter will seek to give a brief overview of the dissertation. A first chapter will attempt to find analogies between Plath's poetry and Surrealist art. The second chapter will attempt to provide focus on Plath's use of the motifs of dream and fairy tale. The third chapter will seek to detect elements of surrealism in the domestic settings of Plath' s poetry. The conclusion will attempt to present Plath as a poet who is able to create the Fantastic by combining both European and American cultural motifs.
