During the years of the First Crusade (1095-1099) to Jerusalem the Maltese Islands were in an ambivalent position. Decades prior to this, Norman Chnst1an warriors were already conquering the fractious eclectic states of southern Italy. In 1060-61, the brothers Robert Guiscard (c.1015-1085) and Roger (c.1031-1101) conquered Messina in Sicily, which was to act as the springboard of the thirty-year Norman conquest of Muslim Sicily. In 1091, Roger attacked Malta, whose population at this point was largely Muslim.en_GB
