É con queste parole che Leonard Forster introduce l'argomento sull' arentino e sul petrarchismo visto come una corrente con delle specifiche convenzioni che hanno avuto origine dalle poesie del Petrarca, diffondendosi poi per tutta Europa. Come dice Richard Waswo nell'articolo The Petrarchan Tradition as a Dialectic of Limits, l'aggettivo 'petrarchismo' nella sua apparente semplicità ha un significato molto esteso.en_GB
