Abstract: Background: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis globally and is usually treated conservatively through observation, physiotherapy and brace prescription or by surgical intervention. The quality of life (QoL) has long been the subject of research however, there has not been much research about QoL in scoliotic subjects in the Maltese population. Purpose: This study explored the QoL of the Maltese scoliotic population as it is important that physiotherapists are made aware of the effect of the condition on the adolescents’ QoL, due to the holistic care approach. Study Design: An exploratory research design was used to explore and understand the QoL of scoliotic subjects. This was done by using a quantitative approach and using a purposive sample. Method: Questionnaire packs were distributed by the intermediary and questionnaires were returned via the self-addressed envelope. Descriptive statistics and statistical analysis were used in order to determine whether gender, Cobb angle magnitude and method of treatment influence the adolescents’ QoL, as well as comparing the 5 domains of the SRS-22 between the braced and surgically treated cohorts. Results: 19 participants were recruited for this study and certain trends were seen to be in keeping with literature. However, there were no significant differences between any of the 8 hypotheses presented. Conclusion: Although all 8 null hypotheses were accepted, trends were seen even with a small sample. Further research could be carried out when the restrictions in clinic attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic are lifted.
