Abstract: Background/aim: A research study investigating the functional outcomes, levels of pain and disability and extent of shoulder instability post-operatively has not been carried out on the Maltese population. The aims of this study are to investigate the use of OSIS and SPADI to assess the outcomes of shoulder arthroscopy in a local population of patients diagnosed with shoulder instability, and to determine the outcome of shoulder arthroscopy and postoperative physiotherapy in patients with shoulder instability. Methods: A questionnaire was developed using the Oxford Shoulder Instability Score (OSIS) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) to collect data on the functional status, pain and disability levels as well as the extent of shoulder instability. Results were analyzed via Microsoft Office Excel and SPSS®. Results: 94.73% (n=18) of the respondents of this sample had an arthroscopic Bankart repair, with an average age of 36.95 (±11.84) years. An average OSIS score of 35.05 (±10.38) and an average SPADI total score of 20.79% (±0.26) were obtained. The OSIS and SPADI Pain Score had a statistically significant correlation with the number of physiotherapy sessions, with pvalues of 0.03 and 0.43 respectively. Conclusions: The OSIS and SPADI PROMs had positive correlations within this sample in this study. The study also suggests that such outcome measures could add value to the local physiotherapy management protocol for patients following arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
