Abstract: | Assessing a site explored during the formative years of archaeological practice often bedevils any serious attempt to understand its function. This paper considers one archaeological site on Malta-Ras ir-Raħeb-that has been thought to be the location of the famed temple of Hercules listed in Ptolemy’s Geography. The argument for the ritual association of the site is re-visited on the basis of the pottery assemblage which is compared to ceramic assemblages from other sites in the archipelago. The study re-considers the duality inherent in pottery studies, namely that while all pottery vessels may be context-specific and take their significance from the context, at the same time most vessels are capable of transcending contexts as single pieces or as types. |
