Abstract: Learning does not only occur in formal settings like schools, but also in nonformal environments. This research will give a short account of what a nonformal educational system is, and how learning can occur outdoors. Scouting is the main focus of this study which will be analysed as a non-formal educational setting helping children aged between seven and eleven to develop in a holistic way. For this study a sample of Cub Scouts, their parents and their leaders from four different Scout Groups located around different parts of Malta were interviewed, and the results acquired are displayed in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5. From this investigation it can be concluded, that Scouting as a non-formal educational setting is viewed (by the participating individuals) as a positive influence on the children's development, as through Scouting they acquire various skills and values which are not catered for in the formal educational setting.
