This qualitative study was conducted with the aim of unravelling the thought processes behind the construction and management of virtual identities by Maltese emerging adults on social media networks, specifically on Facebook and Instagram. The effects of feedback will also be studied in relation to perception of identity and self-esteem. Data gathering was carried out through semi-structured interviews and a focus group, with a sample of six participants, with three members of each gender. The research resulted in a number of defined categories, which suggested reasoning behind online identity management behaviours and ideologies. The study concludes with a summary of the key findings regarding identity management processes and impact of positive and negative online feedback on the individual’s virtual identity. Furthermore, recommendations and limitations will be discussed to facilitate further studies in the field, as well as precautionary words regarding cautious use of virtual identities.en_GB
