Abstract: | The role of the double bass as a solo instrument and as a member of the orchestra dates back to the 16th century. From then, it underwent a gradual evolution which led to a double bass renaissance in the late 19th century. The aim of this dissertation is to give an overall view of the historical journey of the bass instrument from its origins up to the 20th century, including structural and technical developments. |
