Abstract: This dissertation stylistically and sociopolitically analyses the communicative aspect of what became a popular graphic visual language in Malta between 1950s-1970s. The research conducted illustrates the distinctive timbre of modern graphic art and design during this period, while delving into what extent, and how, this was embraced by Maltese artists and designers. Individual and collective reactions to the evolving international style are addressed, with particular attention drawn to the innovations which formed this sphere of visual communications as we know it today. While accepting the influence of modernism within the context of Maltese graphic art and design, this dissertation identifies how this practice evolved. Through close study of a select catalogue spanning across a variety of print mediums, the communicative aspect - encompassed by an evolving visual language and direct social commentary - will be underlined. The primary method of research employed a thorough search of graphic works produced by select Maltese modern artists and designers, including, but not exclusively limited to, Emvin Cremona (1919-1987), Frank Portelli (1922-2004), Antoine Camilleri (1922-2005), Saviour Scerri (1921-2011), and Norbert Francis Attard (1951- ). Data mining in national and private collections was carried out. The analysis of the selected works was framed in the relevant literature, while interviews were conducted with artists and designers, art scholars, art collectors, and individuals with vast experience on the topics at hand.
