Abstract: "The various attempts to sketch out a Marxist sociology of music have met with varying degrees of success; nevertheless, they have all had to address the same basic problems confronting Marxist and non-Marxist sociologists alike: if there is indeed a relation between music and society - which Marxist thinkers with their particular ideological assumptions would not wish to deny - at what level does the relation operate? Does it operate simply because there is a correspondence between the structures of the two? Is the relation one of content, and if so, in what sense is it legitimate to speak of content when referring to music?
