Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to shed light on Giuseppe Spiteri Fremond, a Maltese musician, teacher and composer of the nineteenth century. This composer deserves more recognition and should also be recognized for his contribution to the local musical scenario. He was the first musician in Malta to establish a boys' choir of 'voci bianche' to perform sacred music. The Messa (1849), that is being edited and analysed, is one of his compositions created especially for them. This dissertation opens with a biographical sketch of this composer, followed by a historical overview of the nineteenth century art music in Malta. This information will help put into context the music of this composer, two of whose works are edited and presented here: the Messa (1849) and Juravit Dominus. It is hoped that this work will help revive our national musical heritage, not only in terms of performance, but also by providing an additional source for the teaching of Maltese art music.
