Obstacles perceived and experienced by young mothers to their and their baby's wellbeing

Abstract

Obstacles perceived and experienced by young parenting mothers were examined, through literature and field research. The sample for this research study was made up of 7 young women who for part of their pregnancy were residents of Dar Guzeppa Debona in Gozo. Their experiences, feelings, fears and perceptions were captured through an in depth questionnaire. These young mothers reported several obstacles they perceived they would encounter while pregnant, and in reality did experience after the birth of their child. Areas inquired into were shelter, emotional support, education/employment and finance. The interviewees all lived with their families, notwithstanding their desire to have alternative living arrangements. These young mothers place parents and professionals high on their list of people who provided or who are now providing emotional support. The majority of the respondents were full time workers prior to the pregnancy, but most ceased their working activity while pregnant. A number of respondents revealed that returning to their jobs was inevitable in order to provide for the dyad. The school attending respondents continued their education both during the pregnancy and after giving birth. All respondents receive subsidies and benefits and some are also financially aided by other sources such as parents. However as a general rule, the majority of the respondents describe their financial situation as 'comfortable'.
