Abstract: The exploitation of natural resources is one of the main elements of economic growth and development, however this has serious negative impacts on the environment. In the last few years the depletion of natural resources, pollution and fluctuating fuel prices have become a major concern worldwide. In order to mitigate these issues mankind focused on the use of renewable alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind and hydro energy. One aspect to be considered when using renewable energy sources is energy storage, which allows harvesting of energy from alternative sources during the periods in which it is possible and storing the energy for use as required.
