Abstract: Composite sandwich panels provide superior stiffness-to-weight ratios when compared to composite laminates due to the sandwich effect. The sandwich effect describes the increase of the second moment of area of a structure by sandwiching a lightweight and high shear modulus core between two high in-plane elastic modulus and low shear modulus skin.
