Abstract: The link between fracture forming limit diagrams (FFLD) and ductile fracture mechanics was investigated by Atkins and MJ11 where a connection was determined between in-plane fracture strain pairs of biaxially formed uncracked sheets and the specific essential work of fracture (ie. the fracture toughness) determined from pre-cracked test pieces. The work presented here extends these ideas to anisotropic materials (low carbon steels, S 1 C commercially pure aluminum and 5754 aluminum alloy) where the calculation of effective strains must incorporate the width to thickness strain anisotropy factor, r. Good correlation is shown between experiment and theory.
