Abstract: The European Parliament created as a mere consultant has grown up to be a co-legislator, together with the Council, of the European Union. Its powers have evolved through the various treaties and treaty revisions which have formed and shaped the European Union as it is today. However, not all has been plain sailing in regards to the shift of power towards the European Parliament, since various politicians and states were and still oppose such a shift, which ultimately leads the Union in becoming more federally inclined. What has the Parliament achieved? Where is the European Parliament heading to? Will the European Union ever have a European government? And what is Malta's view on this issue?
