Abstract: Valletta is the capital city of Malta. It has a history dating back to 1566 and throughout this period, it has followed many demographic changes. From the locality with the highest population in the 19th century, it is today experiencing an outflow of its population. In this dissertation, the reasons behind this exodus are studied. The localities of these out-migrants from Valletta are also tried to be identified. The main research methods to be used are an extensive literature review, consultation of different censuses, other primary data, use of computer software such as G.I.S and S.P.S.S and a questionnaire to migrants from Valletta. Some reasons that encourage change of residence are studied in more detail than others. These in-more depth studies are mostly related to the social problems of Valletta. Crime, education and unemployment in Valletta were compared with other localities. By doing the latter, the existence of social problems in Valletta was trying to be confirmed with figures and maps. Than some proposals were put forward to eliminate these social problems if they really exist in Valletta. The main aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the recognition that that the capital city of Malta is ending like the old capital city of Malta - Mdina. Mdina was betrayed by the Order of St. John, as they did not consider Mdina as a city to fulfill their interests. This story is happening again, but this time the capital city of Malta is not betrayed by any foreigner or conqueror, but by its own people.
